Solar da Luz holds the memory of generations of a noble family, the Fidalgos da Luz.

Once the home of “The Fidalgos da Luz”, a noble family, Solar da Luz has a rich and fascinating history and it symbolizes the rich history and cultural heritage of Fafe and the Minho region. From the 17th to the early 20th century, aristocratic families built country homes in the Minho region. Those properties used to be as luxurious as palaces and the perfect retreats for noble families. But as only royalty houses could use the term palace, those properties were called “Solar”.

“The Fidalgos da Luz” built Solar da Luz between the 17th and 18th centuries. A very influential family in the region, several of the family's members had prestigious roles in the Portuguese court. Up to this date the family coats of arms, granted by Kings D. João V and D. José I in recognition of their nobility and services to the nation, remain in the Solar da Luz's walls. The little 1632 chapel still stands in the garden as a heritage of the "Fidalgos da Luz" era. But the history of Solar da Luz goes even further back. Historians believe the medieval tower and stonework existed before, as well as prior buildings on the land. Today, Solar da Luz stands as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Fafe. And now, the Vieira family welcomes visitors worldwide to enjoy this charming palace.

A restoration to honor the essence and legacy of this palace

The elegant interior and beautiful garden of Solar da Luz are a testament to the miraculous transformation of a once-despairing place. When Carlos Vieira bought the property in 2012, Solar da Luz had been abandoned for many years and was fading into oblivion. However, Carlos Vieira and his family committed themselves to preserving the city's heritage. And thus they embarked on a meticulous restoration - a true labor of love and dedication - to bring back the splendor of Solar da Luz and preserve its essence. Solar da Luz had undergone several modifications over the decades that did not respect its original architecture or style. Modern tiles were placed on the facade’s wall, the beautiful ceilings and walls were damaged, and the garden was overrun with bushes. The coats of arms and other ornaments were almost unrecognizable. Solar da Luz had lost its former beauty. However, Carlos Vieira and his family committed themselves to preserving the city's heritage.

The Vieira family recognized the importance of such a unique property. So they sponsored a meticulous restoration project. It recovered Solar da Luz’s original character and materials while respectfully introducing modern conveniences. They also hired Nini Andrade Silva, one of the most renowned Portuguese designers, and devoted the finest resources to elevate Solar da Luz’s interiors. The result is an elegant and beautiful atmosphere that reminds us of a palace but with the comfort of a home.
